Social isolation sucks.
I’ve been stuck at home with my 6 year old for four days and already I’m feeling so out of touch with the outside world.
I saw a meme recently that said something like: “Sadly, I’m realizing that my only hobbies were going out and spending money.”
All it takes is to have something taken away before you realize how much you miss it.
However, this is an amazing time to self-reflect and explore more hobbies.
And why not turn one of them into something lucrative?
If you’ve been thinking about starting a blog, now may just be the perfect time! Keep in mind that starting a blog is easy but turning it into a money maker takes time and effort.
Good thing you have some time!
How To Start a Mom Blog
Before your fingers hit the keyboard and you begin dishing out your mom-related content and stories, you need to set up a site to host your blog.
Your site is the showcase of your written content. It’s where people go to read your stuff.
Setting Up Your Web Hosting
You have two options when setting up a site: free or paid.
However, if you’re more serious about making money from your blog, then you should consider a paid web hosting service. Services such as WordPress.com, Bluehost and HostGator offer paid web hosting services with lots of additional features.
Having your own domain (such as https://motherhoodandmayhem.online for example) makes your site look more credible – potential customers will be more likely to buy what you are selling.
Choosing a Look and Design
An important aspect of starting a mom blog is to choose your niche – this is the topic your blog will focus on. What you write about determines how your blog should look and feel.
For example, you may decide to write about homeschooling your children. In this case, you may want your blog to have bright and fun colors, emphasizing your passion for teaching children.
A more serious topic, such as dealing with breastfeeding challenges or fertility issues, may require a more subtle color scheme.
Once you have decided on the personality of your blog, you want to devise a theme (color, textures, graphics, etc.) that reflects your tone and style. This will become your brand.
A brand is important because it makes you recognizable in the blogging world – especially if you plan on making money from your site.
Write Good Stuff
You can have the coolest looking blog and have chosen a profitable niche but if you don’t write content that people want to read, no one will stick around.
Writing good content is not hard. Remember, you are offering a solution to a problem – not just rambling on about your own life.
Balancing Information With Insight
I’m sorry, but not many people want to read about your life unless your story offers that solution they are looking for.
Be sure to balance valuable information with personal insight. Your readers do want to get to know you but they want answers more than anything.
Making Your Content Readable
When you do write an article, think about how easy it is to read.
Take a look over this article for example. You’ll notice that my paragraphs are short and I use headers to break up concepts. You can also use bullet lists to spread out content.
I also insert images, subscribe forms and related links to make the post less visually congested.
Moms don’t have a lot of time to decipher information and will often skim through articles to get the answer they are looking for.
If you make the content easy to read, they are more likely to commit to reading the entire article – which increases the chances of having that reader comment or share the article.
How Do Moms Make Money From Blogging?
Making money from blogging is not a “get-rich-quick” situation in which you will be earning a sustainable income overnight. It takes time to get visitors to your site, develop a loyal audience and then sell them things.
But the harder you work at creating engaging and readable content for your blog, the more people will come to your site to read it.
Once you have a regular flow of traffic, you can consider these methods of making money with your blog:
Affiliate marketing is a type of marketing arrangement between online companies that sell products and bloggers who advertise their products.
A popular site for affiliate marketing is Amazon. Once you sign up for their associate program, you can link to or advertise products sold through their site.
If a visitor clicks on the link and purchases the product, you earn a commission.
Again, if you have a lot of traffic to your site, this is an easy way to earn a passive income. All you do is place the links, promote the product and sit back while people buy.
Ebooks and Online Courses
If you have knowledge about a particular topic, you can turn that know-how into an online course or eBook.
You may be wondering why anyone would pay for what they can Google themselves. The truth is, moms don’t have time to scour the internet for the answer to their problems. If you can provide them that answer in one convenient source, they will buy.
You can easily create an eBook using online design services such as Canva. Online courses can be facilitated and designed through sites such as Udemy or Teachable (just keep in mind that these sites will take a small commission for every course sold).
If there’s one thing moms love to buy online, it’s printable products.
You can use Canva to create printable organizers, charts, labels, cheat sheets or worksheets you can then sell individually or as a bundle.
Be sure the visual design of your printable products coordinates with or complements the brand and look of your site – this will help to make your products and site more recognizable.
Driving Traffic to Your Blog
Everyone loves a good deal and you may benefit your site’s traffic by offering a taste of some of these ideas (eBooks, courses, printable products) for free. For example, you can offer a chapter or two of your eBook, a mini version of your course or a few individual worksheets.
Tie these offers to your subscription form and build your list of email subscribers. These are the people you will eventually pitch your full paid-for products to.
You will also attract more traffic to your blog by posting original and valuable content to your blog on a regular basis. People love long articles (think 900-1000 words) that provide information and personal insight to solve a problem.
