Narcissism in Men and Women: Is There a Difference?

by | Nov 27, 2023 | 0 comments

The term “narcissism” on this blog is used to describe a specific set of personality traits. It is not intended to be used as a professional diagnosis.

Narcissism is a complex personality disorder with specific behaviors that help the narcissist maintain a perfect image of themselves.

These behaviors often hurt and manipulate others, making it difficult for narcissists to have functioning relationships.

Even though narcissism can be formally diagnosed as Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD), that doesn’t mean we can’t learn how to deal with people by recognizing their narcissistic traits.

And when it comes to narcissistic traits, many people wonder if there are gender differences when it comes to narcissists.

Are narcissistic traits in women more common than men? Are narcissistic traits in men more harmful than women?

Let’s take a look at the differences in narcissistic traits between men and women:

Understanding Narcissistic Traits

Before getting into potential gender differences, it’s important to understand what narcissistic traits are.

Narcissism involves an excessive interest in oneself, a lack of empathy for others, and a grandiose sense of self-importance.

Individuals with narcissistic traits may exhibit behaviors such as an obsession with personal success, a constant need for admiration, and a tendency to exploit others for personal gain.

Narcissistic Traits in Men

Research suggests that certain narcissistic traits may be more commonly observed in men.

Men with narcissistic tendencies may display an exaggerated sense of masculinity, seeking to dominate social interactions and relationships.

Their desire for power and control can manifest in various aspects of their lives, impacting both personal and professional relationships.

Narcissistic Traits in Women

Similarly, women can exhibit narcissistic traits, although the expression of these traits may differ.

Some studies propose that narcissistic traits in women may involve a focus on physical appearance, social status, and relational dominance.

Female narcissists may utilize charm and manipulation to achieve their goals, using different strategies than their male counterparts.

Common Ground

While there may be observed differences in the manifestation of narcissistic traits between men and women, it’s important to recognize that narcissism exists on a spectrum.

Both genders can exhibit a range of narcissistic behaviors, and individual differences play a significant role in how these traits are expressed.

Navigating Relationships with Narcissistic Traits

Regardless of gender, dealing with individuals who exhibit narcissistic traits can be challenging.

Establishing healthy boundaries, practicing effective communication, and seeking support from friends, family, or professionals are vital strategies.

Recognizing the signs of narcissism and understanding how it may impact relationships is a crucial step in fostering healthier connections.

Narcissistic Traits Between Genders

When we talk about narcissistic traits in men and women, it’s important that we approach the topic with an understanding that personality traits vary widely among individuals.

While there may be tendencies associated with gender, each person is a unique combination of experiences, genetics, and environmental factors.

We can’t really say if narcissistic men are worse than narcissistic women and vice versa.

What we can do is gain a better understanding of these traits so we can recognize controlling and manipulative behavior.
