How to Handle a Narcissist in a Relationship

by | Nov 27, 2023 | 0 comments

The term “narcissism” on this blog is used to describe a specific set of personality traits. It is not intended to be used as a professional diagnosis.

Dealing with a narcissist in a relationship is, without a doubt, extremely challenging.

Whether you are in a partnership with a narcissist or trying to co-parent with one, their behaviors make it difficult to connect and communicate with them.

If you’re stuck dealing with a narcissist, it’s important to find healthy ways to cope with their behaviors.

Just remember that narcissists are often emotionally abusive, so there’s nothing wrong with ending the relationship!

But I do understand there are times when that isn’t possible.

So to help you navigate this complex relationship, here are ways that you can handle a narcissist:

Understanding Narcissistic Behaviors

Identifying narcissistic behaviors is crucial.

For instance, your narcissistic boyfriend or girlfriend may constantly seek admiration by dominating conversations or dismissing your achievements.

A lack of empathy might be evident in their inability to understand your emotions.

Recognizing these traits is the first step in addressing the challenges of being in a relationship with a narcissist.

Communicate Effectively

Clear and assertive communication is key.

For example, instead of saying, “You always make everything about you,” try expressing your feelings with an “I” statement like, “I feel unheard when our conversations focus solely on your experiences.”

Setting boundaries is also vital to maintain a healthy balance in the relationship.

Practice Self-Care

Being in a relationship with a narcissist can be emotionally draining.

Engage in self-care activities that bring you joy and relaxation, whether it’s reading a book, practicing mindfulness, or enjoying a hobby.

Establish a support system of friends and family who understand the challenges you’re facing.

Set Boundaries

Establishing firm boundaries is essential.

For instance, if your partner tends to monopolize your time, set a boundary by scheduling dedicated “me time” and communicate its importance.

Clearly expressing what behaviors are unacceptable and being consistent in enforcing these boundaries is crucial for your well-being.

Avoid the Blame Game

Narcissists often deflect blame onto others. Rather than engaging in the blame game, focus on constructive solutions.

For example, if your narcissistic girlfriend or boyfriend shifts blame for a missed event, steer the conversation toward finding a compromise or solution.

Encourage open dialogue and problem-solving.

Seek Professional Support

Therapy can provide valuable guidance. A mental health professional can help you navigate the challenges of a narcissistic relationship.

They may offer strategies to cope with specific behaviors and assist in developing healthy communication patterns.

Evaluate the Relationship

Periodically assess the overall health of the relationship. Consider whether the positive aspects outweigh the challenges.

If the relationship becomes toxic and damaging to your well-being, it may be necessary to reevaluate its sustainability.

Encourage Accountability

Encourage your partner to take responsibility for their actions. Provide specific examples of behaviors and their impact on the relationship.

However, be prepared for resistance, as narcissists may struggle with self-reflection.

Dealing With a Narcissistic Partner

Handling a narcissist in a relationship requires patience, effective communication, and a commitment to self-care.

By setting boundaries, seeking support, and fostering open dialogue, you can navigate the complexities of a narcissistic relationship with resilience and grace.

Remember, your well-being is important, and it’s okay to prioritize your happiness and mental health!
