22 Single Mom Bedroom Ideas

by | Single Mom Life | 2 comments

The term “narcissism” on this blog is used to describe a specific set of personality traits. It is not intended to be used as a professional diagnosis.

As a single mom, I know how important it is to carve out a little sanctuary just for ourselves.

My bedroom is my little hideaway spot when my kid has friends over and have commandeered the living room.

It’s also where I relax at the end of the day.

So it needs to be a relaxing space that represents me!

But I know putting together the perfect single mom bedroom is a matter of just throwing a few things together.

That’s why I put these ideas to inspire you to create a retreat that feels right!

Some of them I’ve used in my own bedroom:

Making the Most Out of Small Spaces

I have a two bedroom apartment with a den, which was used as a toy room for my child.

When I decided I want to set up a home office, I switched bedrooms with child, giving them the big room for all their stuff.

I figured, I just need a bed and dresser, so why not take the smaller space?

Honestly, I love it because it’s cozy, but it wasn’t without its challenges to find space for everything.

If you have a small bedroom too, here are some ideas for making the most out of what you’ve got:

1 Bed With Built-In Storage Drawers

When space is tight, beds that double as storage are a total life-saver. You get a place to stash clothes, linens, or random stuff without adding bulky furniture.

2 Fold-Down Desk

If you need a workspace but don’t have room for a full desk, a fold-down option saves floor space and tucks away when you’re done.

3 Over-the-Door Organizers

Perfect for catching all those little things that tend to get lost, like socks, accessories, or even makeup.

4 Floating Shelves

These keep your stuff off the floor but still close at hand. Plus, they add a little style without taking up room.

5 Bookcase Room Divider

I did this before when my computer desk was in my bedroom! I used a bookshelf to create a separate area. It was a super easy way to split the room.

Personalize Your Space

While I know you probably have reign over how the rest of your home is decorated (until your child starts to have opinions), but your bedroom is where you can fully be you.

Or at least the part of you that you don’t want splashed all over the rest of your space.

My bedroom is dark, with black shelves and black bedding, but I wouldn’t use that color in my living room.

Here are some ideas to help you create a truly personalized space:

6 Custom Wall Art

Nothing says “this is mine” like art that speaks to you. You can hang prints, paintings, or even your own creations!

7 Accent Colors

Adding a splash of color with pillows, rugs, or a painted wall can really make your room feel personal without overwhelming the space. I said my bedroom was black, but there are splashes of pink and teal throughout!

8 Throw Pillows and Blankets

These are like the easiest way to add comfort and personality. You can wwitch them up when you want a quick refresh.

9 Personal Photos

Surround yourself with pictures that remind you of good times and people you love (like your kids). It makes the room feel warmer and more yours.

10 Decorative Lighting

Soft lamps, string lights, or funky fixtures can change the mood and make your space feel cozy.

11 Statement Pieces

A bold chair, an interesting lamp, or even a unique rug can give your room character without a full makeover.

12 Painted Furniture

Updating a dresser or nightstand with a fresh coat of paint can breathe new life into old pieces and make the room pop. I look at my black dresser and nightstands and there are days when I’m very tempted!

13 DIY Curtains

Custom or homemade curtains let you control light and privacy, and you get to pick exactly what fits your vibe. If you’re not into sewing, you can get these little curtain clips and turn any piece of fabric into a curtain.

Budget-Friendly Updates

Yeah, so we’re not all millionaires that can afford lavish upgrades for our bedrooms.

We’re single moms after all!

But you can give your bedroom a fresh look with some budget-friendly updates.

Here are my faves:

14 DIY Headboard

You don’t have to spend a fortune!. Building or decorating your own headboard can be a fun project and instantly elevate your bed. I used part of my kid’s old crib to make one (back when I had a double bed).

15 Second-Hand Furniture

Thrift stores and online marketplaces are goldmines for unique pieces that add charm without breaking the bank. My whole bedroom set came from Facebook years ago for $50!

16 Removable Wall Decals

These stickers are an easy way to add pattern or design without commitment. They’re perfect for renters or anyone who likes to switch things up.

17 Dollar Stores

The cheapest way to redo a room is to hit up the dollar store! Seriously, there are so many things you can find and throw together to make your room feel like an expensive oasis.

Finding Balance – Function and Comfort

I don’t spend a lot of time in my bedroom, but I want to make the most of the time I do.

That’s why I balance function with comfort—a big poufy pillow for sitting up in bed and writing, charge cords at the ready, and my closet neat and tidy so I’m not distracted by chaos.

Even if you just use your room for sleeping, there’s no reason you can’t make it work for you!

Here are some ideas for balancing function and comfort:

18 Cozy Bedding

Soft sheets, fluffy pillows, and a warm comforter make your bedroom feel like a retreat after a long day.

19 Nightstand With Outlets

Having your phone charger, lamp, and other essentials all in one spot keeps things tidy and easy to reach. Honestly, all you have to do is cram a power bar into your nightstand’s drawer.

20 Comfy Chair

A spot to sit, read, or write, especially if you don’t spend much time in your room, makes it feel more like your own space. When I had the big room, I had my papasan chair in there. Not going to lie, kind of miss it.

21 Organized Closet

A neat closet saves time and stress when you’re picking out clothes, and it just feels good to have things in their place. My closet is small and mighty with a spare dresser and lots of room to hang clothes.

22 Soft Lighting

Harsh overhead lights can kill the vibe. Soft, warm lighting is way better for winding down and relaxing.

Hi Anna! Thanks for your kind words! I have beige walls too in my apartment and very little sunlight during the day, so I know exactly what you mean. I try to make the most of the natural light I do have my using white blinds and light airy curtains (so I still have my privacy). And I stick to colors like soft teals and yellows in my pillows and blankets and stuff. You can always use rugs to add color or some wall art (Command strips are great for putting up prints and posters in apartments!). Other than that, I also have lamps and string lights all over the place lol I hope this helps! <3
