Awhile ago I posted about narcissists in movies.
I find it super helpful to understand what narcissism looks like when I see it portrayed in something like a show or film.
Now, I want to talk specifically about narcissistic parents.
Narcissistic parents in movies are everywhere, and honestly, they can be both fascinating and frustrating to watch.
But when you’re dealing with a narcissistic co-parent, it can be helpful to see other people go through similar struggles.
These films capture the ways parents manipulative, gaslight, or control.
I’m not here to psychoanalyze every character, but I do want to share some movies that got it right.
And let me know in the comments any narcissistic parents I missed!

1 Mother Gothel from Tangled
Mother Gothel is the ultimate manipulator who pretends to care for Rapunzel but only values her for the magical youth her hair provides.
She isolates Rapunzel, controls her environment, and gaslights her into believing the outside world is dangerous all to serve her own selfish needs.
I watched a really interesting take on Mother Gothel by Youtubers known as Cinema Therapy.
They mention things like how when Mother Gothel kisses Rapunzel, she only kisses her hair.
And they really dig into how MG gaslights Rapunzel throughout the film.
You can watch the breakdown here!
2 LaVona Fay Golden from I, Tonya
LaVona is harsh and emotionally abusive, constantly belittling her daughter Tonya to control and shape her for her own ambitions.
Her lack of empathy and obsession with status leave Tonya struggling to find self-worth outside her mother’s harsh judgments.
It sucks what Tonya Harding did to Nancy Kerrigan (yes, I am that old to remember), but it shows what unfettered emotional abuse to children can do to them.
That’s why I’m all about protecting kids from the harm of their narcissistic parents—and if you’re worried about your own kiddo, you’re already protecting them!
3 Allie Fox from The Mosquito Coast
Allie is controlling and obsessed with his own vision of utopia, disregarding his family’s needs and feelings.
His charisma masks a dangerous narcissism that forces his family into increasingly harmful situations just to prove he’s right.
4 Harold from The Meyerowitz Stories
Harold’s narcissism shows in his emotional distance and self-centered behavior, often prioritizing his own career and desires over his children’s well-being.
His lack of genuine support leaves his family fractured and longing for approval.
This is one movie that really shows the effects narcissistic parenting can have on kids once they reach adulthood.

5 Royal Tenenbaum from The Royal Tenenbaums
Royal neglects and emotionally manipulates his children, using charm to avoid responsibility.
His selfishness and inconsistency create lasting damage, as his kids struggle with abandonment and seek validation from an absent father.
6 Mamaw from Hillbilly Elegy
Mamaw exerts control through guilt and manipulation, pushing family members to conform to her strict and often harsh expectations.
Her tough love often crosses into emotional abuse, prioritizing her image over her family’s emotional needs.
7 Mr. and Mrs. Wormwood from Matilda
The Wormwoods dismiss and belittle their daughter Matilda, focused only on their own comfort and material gain.
Their neglect and mockery show a deep lack of empathy and understanding typical of narcissistic parents.
Fun fact though: When Mara Wilson’s (Matilda) mother was going through cancer, the actors who played her parents (Danny DeVito and Rhea Pearlman) took care of her in real life.
Goes to show their amazing acting skills, because it’s hard to watch how Matilda is treated on screen.
8 Violet Weston from August Osage County
Violet is controlling and emotionally volatile, using addiction and cruelty to maintain power over her family.
Her bitterness and self-pity prevent her from truly supporting her children, who suffer under her toxic influence.
This is one of those dysfunctional family movies I can’t get enough of but it really highlights how fractured a family can be under the rule of a narcissist.
9 Ingrid Magnussen from White Oleander
Ingrid’s narcissism shines through her coldness and obsession with control, even when it comes to her daughter’s life.
Her harsh decisions are more about preserving her own ideals than protecting or nurturing her child.
I was obsessed with this movie when it first came out!
I love how this character is portrayed as almost aloof but emotionally dangerous.
And as hard it was for her daughter to come to terms with what her mother had done, it’s amazing to see her strength come through during the movie.
10 Mother from Flowers in the Attic
Mother is calculating and self-serving, willing to sacrifice her children’s well-being for wealth and status.
Her manipulation and emotional cruelty reveal a narcissistic disregard for the emotional and physical needs of her kids.
I’m old enough to remember when EVERYONE’S mom owned this book.
Once I was of age to read it, I started to question things! lol
What Narcissistic Parents in Movies Teach Us About Family
These characters remind us of how damaging self-centered parents can be, even when it’s wrapped in charm or tough love.
But just by recognizing the signs and understanding the last impact, a parent can help their own child avoid these effects.
Anyway, it’s your turn! Did I miss any narcissistic movie parents?
