Co-parenting isn’t always smooth sailing—just ask a celebrity.
For every cute photo of exes cheering on their kid at a soccer game, there’s usually a messy story behind the scenes.
And honestly, it’s actually a little reassuring to know that even with all their money and resources, famous folks still struggle to figure this stuff out!
I’ve rounded up ten celebrity co-parenting issues that prove it’s not just the rest of us trying to navigate tricky schedules, boundaries, and communication fails.
Some of these situations are surprisingly relatable, while others… well, they make me glad my life isn’t splashed across the tabloids.

1 Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie
These two were Hollywood’s golden couple for a hot minute.
They got married in 2014 after nearly a decade together but split in 2016.
They share six kids—Maddox, Pax, Zahara, Shiloh, and twins Knox and Vivienne.
Their co-parenting situation? Honestly, it’s been a mess.
Years of custody battles, court dates, and plenty of headlines later, things have been rocky at best.
Reports say Brad’s relationship with some of the kids is strained, and he’s had limited contact in recent years.
So What Was the Issue?
Ongoing legal battles made it hard for these two to co-parent peacefully.
When things get dragged out in court, it can take a toll on everyone—especially the kids.
If you’re in a similar spot, having a clear agreement (in writing) can cut down on misunderstandings.
And if communication is impossible, a neutral third party (like a mediator) can help keep things focused on the kids, not the drama.
2 Elon Musk and Grimes
They were never officially married, but Elon and Grimes had an on-again, off-again thing from 2018 to 2022.
Together, they have three kids—X Æ A-12, Exa Dark Sideræl, and a third whose details are pretty hush-hush.
Co-parenting seems complicated (not shocking, honestly).
In 2024, Grimes’ mom publicly accused Elon of keeping the kids away from their family, so yeah… sounds tricky.
So What Was the Issue?
One parent withholding the children from the other.
If your co-parent is limiting your access to the kids (without a legal reason), document everything – parental alienation is against the law.
(Unless you’re a billonaire, apparently.)
Keep calm communication records and, if needed, consider legal support to help advocate for parenting time.
Prioritize your child’s well-being by staying patient but proactive.
3 Kate Gosselin and Jon Gosselin
These two were reality TV royalty back in the day.
They got married in 1999 and divorced in 2009, after starring in Jon & Kate Plus 8.
They have eight kids—twins Mady and Cara, and sextuplets Joel, Leah, Aaden, Alexis, Hannah, and Collin.
Co-parenting hasn’t exactly been smooth.
Jon has custody of Hannah and Collin, while Kate has the others.
Jon’s said he’s estranged from most of his kids, and there’s been a lot of drama around phone access and communication.
So What Was the Issue?
Conflicting parenting styles and accusations of mistreatment.
When co-parents can’t agree on how to raise their kids—or when one parent’s approach makes a child uncomfortable—it can lead to kids choosing (or needing) to live with the parent they feel safer with.
If you’re dealing with different parenting styles that are causing serious issues, it’s important to listen to your child’s feelings without pressuring them.
Family therapy can help unpack tough emotions, and legal advice might be needed if there are concerns about safety or well-being.
4 Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes
Tom and Katie’s whirlwind romance led to a 2006 wedding and a high-profile divorce in 2012.
They have one daughter, Suri, who’s now 18.
Co-parenting? Not really happening.
Tom hasn’t been publicly seen with Suri in over a decade, and it’s been reported they’re estranged—many point to Scientology as a big factor in that.
So What Was the Issue?
Religious or lifestyle differences.
When parenting philosophies clash, especially when religion or major beliefs are involved, things can get complicated fast.
It helps to create clear agreements on boundaries for parenting decisions.
And if compromise isn’t possible? Focus on offering your child stability and reassurance in your home life.
5 Eric Roberts and Kelly Cunningham
Eric and Kelly were never married, but they share one daughter, actress Emma Roberts.
They split up in the early ‘90s, and while not much is out there about how they handled co-parenting, Emma seems to have a solid relationship with both parents these days.
So, this one sounds like it turned out okay.
So What Was the Issue?
Inconsistent involvement from one parent during childhood.
Eric Roberts has spoken about being absent during parts of Emma’s life.
If this sounds familiar, it’s never too late to work on your relationship with your child—consistency and honesty go a long way.
Acknowledge the past without making excuses and focus on showing up now.

6 Olivia Wilde and Jason Sudeikis
These two were together for nearly a decade but never made it down the aisle.
They split in 2020 and have two kids together, Otis and Daisy.
Their breakup got messy, especially with that whole custody papers drama during one of Olivia’s public appearances.
That said, both have said they’re focused on doing what’s best for their kids, though it’s clear they’ve had their share of legal battles.
So What Was the Issue?
Public custody disputes that played out in the media.
When co-parenting conflicts go public, it adds stress and can affect the kids.
If your situation is getting messy, try to keep things private and focused on the kids, not social media or public opinion.
A family therapist can help you both stick to child-centered communication.
7 Britney Spears and Kevin Federline
Britney and Kevin tied the knot in 2004 and split in 2007.
They share two sons, Sean Preston and Jayden James.
Kevin’s had primary custody for years, and Britney’s visitation has had its ups and downs.
Their co-parenting has been rocky, to say the least, with plenty of public feuding over the years.
So What Was the Issue?
Disagreements over custody and parenting decisions.
Co-parenting works best with mutual respect, but that’s not always reality.
If you’re struggling to get on the same page, parenting coordination (through a neutral professional) can help manage disputes without constantly running back to court.
8 Charlie Sheen and Brooke Mueller
Charlie and Brooke married in 2008 and divorced three years later.
They have twin boys, Bob and Max.
Both parents have had their struggles, and at different points, the boys have lived with other family members—including Denise Richards, Charlie’s ex-wife.
It’s been a rollercoaster, but reports say Charlie’s stepped up more recently.
So What Was the Issue?
Substance abuse issues affecting custody and stability.
If addiction is part of your co-parenting reality, protecting your kids’ safety has to come first.
Courts can order supervised visitation or temporary custody changes, but you can also set clear boundaries and prioritize open, age-appropriate conversations with your kids.
9 Alec Baldwin and Kim Basinger

Alec and Kim were married from 1993 to 2002.
They have one daughter, Ireland.
Their split was messy, and they had a pretty ugly custody battle back in the day—remember that leaked voicemail?
Things seem to have mellowed out over time, though, and Ireland appears to have a relationship with both parents now.
So What Was the Issue?
High-conflict custody battles with damaging communication.
If you’ve ever said something you regret in the heat of the moment, you’re not alone.
Focus on keeping your communication calm and about the kids.
If that’s impossible, use written communication or a co-parenting app like OurFamilyWizard that helps keep things civil and documented.
10 Ciara and Future
Ciara and Future were engaged in 2013 but called it off in 2014. They share a son, Future Zahir.
Co-parenting hasn’t been easy—there’s been a fair bit of public shade thrown back and forth.
Ciara’s since married Russell Wilson, and he’s taken a major role in helping raise Future, which hasn’t exactly smoothed things over with his biological dad.
So What Was the Issue?
Introducing a new partner into the parenting dynamic.
When one parent remarries and their partner steps up in a parenting role, things can get tense.
If you’re blending families, clear boundaries and respectful communication can help.
It’s important to support your child’s relationship with both biological parents while creating a positive space in your home.
What We Can Learn from Celebrity Co-Parenting Drama
At the end of the day, co-parenting is tricky—whether you’re famous or not.
These celebrity stories might have played out on a much bigger stage, but the issues are the same ones a lot of us deal with behind the scenes.
Custody battles, communication breakdowns, estrangement, blended families… it’s all part of the co-parenting rollercoaster sometimes.
The key is to focus on what’s best for the kids, keep communication as respectful as possible (even when it’s hard), and get help when you need it—whether that’s legal, emotional, or practical support.
No one has it all figured out, not even the rich and famous.
But learning from their experiences? That’s something we can do! <3
